Cub Scouts typically meet once a week during school terms. At  meetings they play team games and learn Scouting skills like hiking, camping, knots, first aid, cooking and more. The real adventure is in the outdoors – hill walks up mountains, treasure hunts, one, two or three night camps, litter-picking, parading on Saint Patrick’s Day, hostel trips, and sometimes overseas trips.

Children of this age love the outdoors. National events for Cubs include JamÓige – a big camp held every four years for Beavers and Cubs – and the National Cub Challenge each year. There are also lots of events run by the Scout County and Scout Province.

Child Safety

The ratio of adults to Cubs is set accordingly. Scouters are all Garda Vetted and trained in Child Safeguarding.

Scouting Ireland is committed to Scouting safely at all ages.

Personal Developement.

Activities allow each Cub to develop in the areas of Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional & Spiritual (S.P.I.C.E.S.) growth according to their own abilities and particular interests. When Cubs have met a set of challenges or have mastered a particular level in a skill they earn a badge to sew on their uniform.

Cubs work in small teams called Sixes which are led by a Cub Scout – called a Sixer – and an assistant called a Seconder. Adult leaders ensure every child has a turn in these roles. Cubs will be involved in planning and running some of their own meetings & activities. They take part in planning their own camps – for example deciding on the menu and doing some cooking on camp, and deciding which activities to do.

When your Cub turns twelve they will be invited to move up to Scouts where the adventure continues with old friends from Cubs and new Scout friends.

Guide for Attaching Scout Badges to a Jumper

Whether you’re sewing them on or using adhesive options, here’s how to properly affix scout badges to a jumper.

What You’ll Need:

  • Scout badges
  • Needle and thread (or sewing machine) in matching colors
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Iron-on adhesive (optional)
  • Iron (if using adhesive)
  • Fabric glue (optional for non-permanent attachment)
  • Jumper to attach badges to

Method 1: Sewing Scout Badges

  1. Position the Badges
Lay the jumper on a flat surface and arrange the badges according to your scout group’s uniform guidelines. Use pins or fabric clips to hold the badges in place.
  2. Thread the Needle
Choose a thread color that matches the edge of the badge. Cut a piece of thread about 18 inches long and thread your needle, tying a small knot at the end.
  3. Begin Sewing
Start sewing from the back of the jumper, bringing the needle up through the edge of the badge. Use a simple running stitch or whipstitch, keeping stitches close together to secure the badge firmly.
  4. Sew Around the Entire Edge
Continue stitching around the edge of the badge, making sure your stitches are neat and secure. Once you’ve gone all the way around, tie a knot at the back of the jumper to finish.
  5. Check Your Work
Ensure the badge is attached securely and lies flat against the jumper. Trim any excess thread.

Method 2: Using Iron-On Adhesive

  1. Prepare the Jumper and Badge
Place the jumper on a heat-resistant surface. Make sure the badge and jumper are free from any dirt or lint.
  2. Position the Badge
Lay the badge in the desired location. Check the instructions on the adhesive you are using to make sure it’s suitable for the fabric.
  3. Iron the Badge
Set your iron to the appropriate heat setting for the jumper fabric. Place a thin cloth over the badge and press the iron down firmly for 10-15 seconds (or as specified by the adhesive instructions).
  4. Secure the Edges
To make sure the badge stays in place, you may wish to sew around the edges even after ironing, as iron-on adhesives can weaken over time.

Method 3: Using Fabric Glue

  1. Apply Fabric Glue
Apply a thin layer of fabric glue to the back of the badge, especially around the edges.
  2. Press and Hold
Position the badge on the jumper and press down firmly. Hold it in place for a minute or two, and then let it dry according to the glue manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Allow Time to Set
Let the glue fully cure (dry) before wearing or washing the jumper. This may take up to 24 hours.

Tips:

  • Plan Placement Carefully: Refer to your scout uniform guide to ensure badges are in the correct spots.
  • Double Check for Security: Especially if the jumper will be washed frequently, sewing may be the most reliable method.
  • Be Careful with Ironing: Always use a protective cloth between the badge and iron to avoid damage.

Following these methods will keep your scout badges securely in place and looking neat on your jumper!
