On the crisp morning of February 8th, 2025, the Youghal Cub Scouts gathered at Glenville GAA Pitch, ready for an adventure. Spirits were high as we checked in, laced up our hiking boots, and prepared for the Glenville Famine Walk. The event, rich in history and community spirit, promised a memorable experience—and it did not disappoint!

After meeting at the starting point, we set off in groups between 10:30 and 11:15, making our way up to the official beginning of the famine walk. The weather was cool but clear, perfect for the journey ahead. As we hiked through the scenic trails, we reflected on the historical significance of the path we were walking. The famine walk serves as a poignant reminder of Ireland’s past, making the experience not only physically engaging but also deeply meaningful.

The route was a moderate challenge, with some tricky spots along the way, but our Cub Scouts were up to the task! With the help of the Venturers, who guided us through the tougher sections (including the “bridge,” which certainly put our balancing skills to the test), everyone managed brilliantly.

About halfway through the hike, we stopped for a well-deserved break, and the excitement peaked as hot chocolate was served! The kids eagerly pulled out their mugs, which they had been reminded to bring along, and enjoyed a warm treat in the fresh air. Some playtime followed, allowing the Cubs to recharge before making the return journey.

The hike back was just as enjoyable, with plenty of laughter and teamwork along the way. By the time we arrived at the pick-up point, there were plenty of muddy boots and happy faces. Good thing we had packed those extra clothes and plastic bags for the dirty shoes!

A huge thank you to the organizers of the Glenville Famine Walk for a fantastic day out. The combination of history, adventure, and camaraderie made this an unforgettable experience for the Youghal Cub Scouts. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

Until the next adventure—Scout’s honour!
